What's your name?
Tzuyen or call me “Ann” :)
Where are you based?
I live in Chicago US, and I’m originally from Taiwan.
Tell us about what your ordinary day looks like.
As a full-time mom, once the housework is done, there’s nothing I love more than spending some quiet time doing puzzles or reading a good book.
How did you get into the world of puzzling?
I bought my first puzzle with my own allowance at a bookstore when I was in middle school — and that’s when my love for puzzling began.
What makes you keep puzzling & how often do you puzzle?
To me, puzzling feels a bit like meditation — it helps me focus on the present moment, without worrying about the future or dwelling on the past. It’s a calming and grounding habit, and I truly enjoy the soothing process of putting the pieces together to form a beautiful image. Puzzling has become a daily habit for me. Whenever I have some free time, I always make sure to sit down and enjoy a puzzle.
What is your favorite type of puzzle?
I really enjoy the way Soonness designs their puzzle cuts — they’re more fun than standard ones, but not as difficult as the irregular kinds. My favorite puzzle sizes are 1000-piece and 500-piece puzzles, and I’m especially drawn to cute, illustration-style designs.
During puzzling sessions, do you listen to anything or puzzle in silence?
I usually like staying in a quiet environment, but I sometimes listen to Buddhist chants or scriptures.
If you were to describe what puzzling means to you, what would it be?
A friend. To me, puzzles are like a quiet companion that’s with me every day.
Tell us about your other interests & joys.
Apart from puzzles, I really enjoy reading novels. When it comes to food, I’d say I have a soft spot for tea, coffee, and Japanese ramen.
Do you have anything you want to share?
We’re living in an age of information overload, surrounded by countless digital devices. I believe it’s important to make time for quiet moments alone — whether it’s reading, puzzling, doing yoga, or any kind of exercise. Taking a break from screens, even just for a little while, is essential. It makes a big difference for our mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.
